Desert Tour Overnight
An exciting and restful night in the largest sand desert in the world
Passing the ancient Bedouin town of Thumrait, you drive through the large gravel desert 'Al Nejd'. After about 175 km, starting in Salalah city, you reach the first desert attraction, the 'Lost City of Ubar' (UNESCO World Heritage Site). This legendary ancient empire was promised to have existed in one of the most inhospitable places in the world - the vast and forbidden Al Rub Al Khali desert, reasonable known as the 'Empty Quarter' ('inanimate region / empty district').
In Dhofar it is an absolute must to visit the Rub Al Khali with its pristine and magical sand dunes. Once you reach this location, find the best place to pitch your tents.
While your guide prepares dinner, go for a walk through "the world's largest sand desert" and marvel at the breathtaking view of the vast expanse on the top of the dunes and watch the sunset. After your meal, sit comfortably by the campfire and watch the starry sky as you chat with your guide or just enjoy the unique silence, free from mobile phones, noise and everyday problems.
If you want, get up early the next day to watch the sunrise. After a fortifying breakfast it is time to pack up and start your way back. You will stop at Wadi 'Dawka' (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is also known as the Incense Wadi, because it has the largest collection of naturally grown frankincense trees in the area.
