Historical Highlights from Marriott
Discover the highlights of East Salalah:
The tour starts in the early afternoon with a visit of the ancient ruins of the once famous city Sumharam (Khor Rori). Khor Rori was an important port on the coast of Dhofar, and one of the main commercial cities of frankincense, probably even the center and main port for shipping (UNESCO World Heritage Site "the frankincense trail").
We continue with the centuries-old "Taqah Castle", the former official residence of the "Wali" (governor) of the region and obtain an insight into the original life. On the way to Salalah we can explore the natural spring "Ayn Razat". Nicely laid amid the quiet, lush mountains, it gets fed every day of the year by a natural underground source of water.
From there we go to the city center, for a brief photo stop at the official palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos ("Al Husn Palace") and visit the old Haffah Souk, which is famous for the sale of high quality frankincense and many other traditional souvenirs of Dhofar. The smell of frankincense fills the Souk, which is already beautifully lit at dusk and is decorated by colorful clay incense burners and incense bags, which can be bought here.
